How to Pack and Move Electronics

Get packing supplies

Packing supplies are the first thing you need to obtain before packing and move your electronics. Go to the DIY store or the improvement store to get the following:

Moving boxes

Note that you should only purchase moving boxes if you do not have the original boxes in which you received your electronic devices. Original packaging is always the best solution. If you do not have the original boxes, then buy the boxes that most match the device that you want to move.

Bubble wrap

There is never enough bubble wrap and it is a perfect way to preserve your electronic devices.

Packing paper

We normally recommend simply using newspapers to protect your belongings, however in this case packing paper is truly the best option. When you place a newspaper on your screen it may be hard to get the stains from the print off of the devices. So, it is better to be on the safe side here.

Permanent markers

Packing fragile items properly and labeling the boxes is the most important thing when it comes to packing and moving electronics. However, if you plan to store your electronic devices, it may be a good option not to write Led TV, or laptop on them as you never know who might see it. Just write Fragile and it will be enough.

Read the manufacturer`s manual

Just like the original packaging is the best option for transporting your electronic devices, so is reading the manufacturer`s manual. If you threw it away a couple of years ago, do not worry. Today, you can find everything on the Internet, so just look it up. Check out any tips for transporting and packing the item and most importantly, incorporate them in your packing and moving process.

Back up all the data before relocating the items

When relocating your electronic devices, there is a risk that the items will get damaged, and that someone would steal them. We strongly recommend that you back up all the data from your computer, tablet, even your phone to an external drive. After all, it is the information on the devices that you need and that are most important.

Another important thing you can do to protect your personal data while moving your electronic devices is to change all the passwords. You should change the passwords on the day before you move, as well as after you have moved. It will take you just a couple of minutes to do this, and you will make it harder for hackers to violate your personal information. And, of course, your passwords should not be easy to guess.

Pack the items carefully

After you have read the manufacturer`s manual, obtained all the packing supplies, and backed up your data, you should start packing your items for relocation. Here is what you should do before placing them in boxes:

• Remove all the batteries – Batteries can leak or stop working if they are inside the device for a long time. Remove them before you move, and when you unpack you can attach them again.
• Clear the devices thoroughly – Get rid of all the dust, as it may move during transport and cause damage to your device.
• Remove all the cords and cables – Take out all the cords and cables from your devices and label them accordingly so that you do not forget where each cable goes. You can use colored sticky notes to mark the device and the cable that connects them.

Now, the time has come that you pack your electronic devices in the moving boxes. You should cover all the devices with packing paper, and with bubble wrap. Do not be shy to use a double layer of bubble wrap as it will definitely protect your items even more. Carefully place the items inside the moving box. When you are done, you should tape the moving boxes safely, so that no item can fall out of the box. Finally, you should label the box so that you know exactly what is inside them.

Transport the items safely

If you are moving in cold weather, remember that this can damage the software of your electronic devices. Instead of placing the devices inside the moving truck and risk them moving around and getting damaged, the best thing you can do is to transport them in the car. You will be there to monitor them, and adjust the temperature inside the vehicle.

In case that you decide to store your electronic devices, know that this is possible only in the climate-controlled storage units. As we already mentioned, low temperatures can lead to software damage and you may not be able to use your electronics in the future.
